Sandoval County Animal Care Services has once again been recognized as a NO-KILL SHELTER by the Best Friends Animal Society. Established in 1984, Best Friends Animal Society today works with more than 5,500 shelters and rescue groups nationwide to end the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters. The County’s shelter has earned this designation for several years.
Kimberly Jaramillo, Assistant Director, Sandoval County Animal Care Services, shared that the Best Friends Animal Society recognition reflects the County’s commitment to the animals in its care, and the daily dedication of staff and volunteers. “We are so fortunate to have the support of leadership and an amazing, tireless group of professionals and volunteers who help us achieve our sheltering policy that starts with this simple truth: every animal is an individual,” said Ms. Jaramillo.
Angelita Sampaio, Senior Specialist, Network Partner Mobilization, Best Friends Animal Society, congratulated Sandoval County and said that “Best Friends Animal Society is happy to celebrate Sandoval County Animal Care Services' commitment to no-kill, and we urge New Mexicans to adopt, foster, advocate, and volunteer with their local shelters and rescue groups to continue no-kill progress in their communities.”
The County’s Animal Care Center is currently under construction in Bernalillo, NM, with an anticipated opening in mid-2027. It will be able to care for 50-60 dogs and 12-20 cats at any time in a 7,350 sq. ft. main building that includes puppy and cat kennels, offices, and training rooms. Accommodations for larger dogs will be in a separate 3,000 sq. ft. plus building with a play area, and there will be a temporary shelter for animals requiring separate quarters (for quarantine or other issues). The Center’s campus will also have an area for large animals (dogs, horses, livestock) available for special situations. The Center’s dog park will be open to Sandoval County residents and visitors, and their pets.
