Obituary, as published in the Albuquerque Journal
Age 47, an eight-year resident of Bernalillo, NM passed away on Friday, December 6, 2013. He was born on September 10, 1966 to James Bernard and Karola (Loder) Baron of Simi Valley, CA. He graduated from California State, Northridge with a BA in Political Science and Public Administration. He was very proud of his work with the US Park Service as a Ranger, the Los Angeles County as a Probation Officer, and just being promoted to Sergeant with the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office. Robert was very involved with the Law Enforcement United which is an organization committed to “Honor the Fallen, and Remember the Survivors.” He had ridden in the LEU Annual Memorial Bicycle Ride in memory of Sgt. Joe Harris in 2010. Sgt. Baron’s hobbies included Shotokan Karate where he had earned his second degree black belt, riding horses, and was a leader in Boy Scouts. He was also a member of Calvary Chapel of Rio Rancho. His quick sense of humor and love and devotion to his family will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Baron, and brother, Tony Baron. Sgt. Baron is survived by his wife of 20 years, Christine “Krysia” (Peleszak) Baron, of Bernalillo, NM; son, Colter Eljasz Baron, of Bernalillo, NM; mother, Karola Paul, of Escondido, CA; sister, Terese H. Baron Hill and husband, Sylvan, of Marlboro, NJ; niece, Avery Faith Hill; nephews, Daniel Baron, Andrew Baron, and Michael Baron.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at the Santa Ana Star Center, 3001 Civic Center Circle SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87144. Inurnment will follow at Vista Verde Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Robert’s honor to Law Enforcement United at P.O. Box 2126, Chesapeake, VA 23320. These kind contributions will assist the LEU’s support of Concerns of Police Survivors and the Officer Down Memorial Page.

News release from the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office
Update 1 — Sandoval County Sheriff’s Sergeant Struck by a Vehicle on I-25
Sandoval County — On December 5, 2013 at 10:30 a.m., Sergeant Robert Baron was investigating a weather-related rollover crash on Interstate 25, mile post 254, near San Felipe Pueblo. While Sergeant Baron was conducting the investigation, he was struck by a vehicle that lost control as it was approaching the crash scene. Sergeant Baron was transported to University of New Mexico Hospital for treatment of his injuries and is currently in ICU. He is in a medically induced coma and in critical condition.
Sheriff Doug Wood and members of the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office are standing vigil with Sergeant Baron, his wife, and 10-year-old son.
Sergeant Baron is an 8-year veteran of the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office. He was recently promoted to patrol sergeant. Prior to his promotion, he was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division as a Detective.

Statement from Sheriff Douglas C. Wood
It is with deepest regret that I announce at 4:43 p.m. today, 12/6/13, that our brother and fellow officer, Sergeant Robert Baron, has succumbed to his injuries. Robert was not only one of my deputies; he was a husband, father, brother, and son, as well as a member of our law enforcement family — and my friend.
I would like to thank the doctors and hospital staff who worked so valiantly to save Robert’s life. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Krysia, his son Colter, and the rest of his family. Robert died doing the job that he loved in service to our community. Please accept my appreciation for your support of the Sheriff’s Office during this trying time.

I was listening to radio traffic on the law enforcement frequency yesterday morning. With the snow and icy road conditions there was quite a bit going on — but one thing I heard sticks with me, and always will. Sam205 (Sgt. Baron) said to one of his patrol units, “it’s going to get worse before it gets better.” Well, a few hours later it got a whole lot worse when a car hit him causing fatal injuries…but now it’s a whole lot better. Rest easy, Sarge.

RIP Sgt. Baron. More than a great police officer but a great friend. I will miss having you on our emergency scenes and having you there on those long OMI scenes. I will always cherish our conversations from those difficult scenes where we shared a common faith and your words of comfort to me when we lost ones we knew. I can’t thank you enough for the love you showed for my family just hours before our world changed that cold morning. My last memories of you are bittersweet….a strong hug, a smile, encouraging words and a Faith unshakeable. I am sad to lose you so soon but I have comfort in knowing I will see you again.
