DWI Prevention Services

The Curriculums we implement in the schools are The Dare to Be You Life Skills and Substance Abuse Prevention curriculum; and The Reconnecting Youth (RY) curriculum. The RY curriculum is a curriculum aimed at youth 9th-12th grades. It is a Peer Group Approach to Building Life Skills.

As an experiential activity for the Reconnecting Youth curriculum, Sandoval County Prevention program has added the Ropes Course. This course is designed to meet varied educational, developmental, and recreational goals. The High ropes focuses on personal achievements and participants are challenged to confront their personal fears and anxieties. Low ropes elements have been designed to explore group interaction, problem-solving, and leadership. A licensed LPCC (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors) facilitates the ROPES Course and coordinates activates to correspond with the Reconnecting Youth curriculum.

Sandoval County DWI & Prevention Program works with Independence High School students under the LDWI Grant and CYFD-EUDL Grant to address underage drinking in Sandoval County. The students at Independence High School in the Film Class create billboards and PSA-s for the program which address underage drinking and drinking and driving. In 2012, these students created: 6 PSA-s which were shown more than 2,000 times on Channel 19, New Mexico CW and My 50 TV (according to Nielson ratings, these spots reached 42% of New Mexico households approximately 15.4 times which amounts to 695,100 people viewing these spots of which it is estimated that 65% were youth under the age of 21); Two billboards (North and South side) at the Corner of 528 and Cielo Vista were viewed by over 34,300 vehicles daily for 365 days in 2011-2012.

Sandoval County DWI & Prevention Program has teamed up with Santa Ana Star Center and Global Spectrum to provide a Designated Driver Booth where patrons can sign a pledge to drive sober for the evening and receive free popcorn and Pepsi for the evening. The booth helps create awareness of driving sober and reduces drinking and driving. For those patrons that do not designate and consume alcohol and need a ride home, we provide a list of taxi services for them to call for a safe ride home.

In the Star Center’s 31 VIP Suites patrons will find information about responsible drinking and our program. This partnership has been an effective marketing tool as SCDWI received LED Signage at all events, Logo and link on Santa Ana Star Center website, inclusion in all Santa Ana Star Center marking and inclusion of Designated Driver services in the City of Rio Rancho Water bill inserts. Also Public Service announcements are made during events at the Santa Ana Star Center and the Independence High School students PSA-s are shown during events.
