Second-Half of Property taxes cannot be postponed

Sandoval County, NM – Despite the current financial climate due to people taking precautions against COVID-19, county property taxes cannot be postponed.
According to New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department Cabinet Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke, the state does not have the statutory right to postpone tax payments for either property taxes or GRT taxes.
Furthermore, the agencies and services that are provided for by property taxes include the state, Sandoval County, city municipalities, public school districts, hospitals, conservancy districts, flood control districts, and other special assessment districts, who depend on the timely and exact distribution of those taxes to survive.
This is why the county is still moving forward with the second half of the 2019 property taxes due on May 10, 2020. Taxes not paid prior to the delinquent date of May 12 will accrue penalty and interest at the rate of one percent per month on the principal balance of taxes owed.
The Sandoval County Assessor’s Office has mailed out the Notices of Value to Sandoval County property owners. The letters were sent out on April 1st to meet with the statutory deadline.
The Sandoval County Board of Commissioners has no supervisory role over the Assessor. Only the State Department of Taxation and revenue may direct the Assessor’s activities.
Due to the State of Emergency and for the protection of human life, both the Treasurer’s Office and the Assessor’s Office are closed to the public until further notice.
For this reason, the Treasurer’s Office is encouraging the following payment methods instead of in-person transactions:

• White drop box located at the North end of the Administration Building
• Pay by Mail: P.O. Box 27139 Albuquerque, NM 87125
(*Dropbox or mailed payments must be by check or money order. Please include your coupon or account number.)
• Pay by Phone: 1-866-873-0944 (English and Spanish)
• Online at: sandovalcountynm.gov/paytaxes

If you have any questions concerning your tax bill, please contact STO at treasurer@sandovalcountynm.gov or by calling 505-867-7581.

For inquiries about NOVs or to protest your property values, the Assessor’s Office encourages the public to contact her office by phone, email, fax, mail or on the web. A quick-access link has been added for residents to use in place of making an appointment.

In addition, Montoya said, “this helps services such as delivery and carryout meals for our seniors and pick up meals for students and families as well as funding for fire & E911, public safety, mental health, roads, and the detention center.”
