Meeting on artwork for the new Bernalillo Senior Center is Nov. 6

Public officials are in the process of choosing artwork for the new senior center that’s scheduled to open next spring in the Town of Bernalillo—and they’re seeking public input.

The only thing decided at this point, is that as much of the art as possible will be works by Sandoval County artists, and they should convey a sense of community. The pieces under consideration will be on display at the current Bernalillo Senior Center at 9:30 AM on Monday, November 6, 2017.

This mini art show is being hosted by New Mexico Arts, a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural affairs, in conjunction with Sandoval County and the Town of Bernalillo.

The new Bernalillo Senior Center is being built on land in Rotary Park that is owned by the Town of Bernalillo. The building, once completed, will be owned and operated by the county. The new, 7,200-square-foot facility is expected to open in the spring of 2018.

The center will host activities ranging from physical fitness classes such as yoga and tai chi to bingo, billiards and card games for the area’s many active seniors. It also will boast a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen that will be used to prepare meals for seniors who come to the facility for lunch, as well as meals for homebound seniors in Placitas, Jemez and the northern parts of Rio Rancho.

The new center’s design and construction cost of just over $2 million is covered through grants from the state legislature. The county will absorb most of its operating costs. But first, the artwork must be chosen.

If you want your art preferences known, show up at the existing center, 255 Camino Del Pueblo in Bernalillo, at 9:30 AM on Monday, November 6. 2017.
