What is a Citizen Academy?

The Sandoval County OEM Citizen Academy is a 9-week course that provides community members an inside view to Emergency Management and its operations. The class will meet once a week at the Sandoval County Emergency Operations Center on Monday evenings from 6pm to 9pm.

Participants will have the opportunity to meet the Sandoval County Emergency Manager and throughout the course there will be special guests from the state, surrounding jurisdictions, and others.

This program is not a certification course, it is just an overview of OEM operations for members of the community.


Why attend the Academy?

The Sandoval County Office of Emergency Management is committed to the protection of, prevention against, mitigation for, response to, and recovery from any natural or man-made disaster or emergency event within our community. We recognize that we cannot accomplish this goal without the help of our community itself. It is our sincere belief that we will all benefit from the active interaction and communication that is at the core of the Citizen Academy. We look forward to your participation.


Who may attend the Citizen Academy?

Individuals living within Sandoval County will be given priority and those persons living outside Sandoval County may be accepted based on available space and approval from our Emergency Manager.

Must be at least 18 years of age. If you are under 18 years of age you must attend as a guest of your parent or guardian. All participants should commit to attending at least 7 weeks of the 8-week instructional period with week 9 being a graduation ceremony.


Application Process?

If the Citizen Academy seems exciting to you, please fill out the required forms (links are on this webpage) and either mail or email them to the address located on the document itself. All applicants will be notified by email of the status of their application prior to the start of the next session.

MINIMUM CLASS SIZE WILL BE 20 PEOPLE AND MAXIMUM WILL BE 30 PEOPLE.

If we get less than 20 applicants we will have to cancel the class and reschedule to a later date. If we get more than 30 applicants, you will be accepted on a first come first serve basis with preference given to Sandoval County residents, and then you will be moved to a waitlist and will then be first in line for our next scheduled Academy.
