Forums promote regional approach to rural-area economic development

Officials from three local counties are hosting public forums geared toward adopting a regional approach to fostering economic development in the rural portions those counties.

These counties are participating in the Stronger Economies Together (SET) program, a national effort sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture to accelerate economic growth in rural communities. Its goal is to have small communities pool resources to develop plans for spurring economic growth across an entire region rather than have those communities—some of which are isolated geographically—continually try to tackle economic development alone.

Locally, this effort is being undertaken a group of communities in what has been dubbed the Mid Central Rural Corridor. Those communities include the rural areas of Bernalillo, Sandoval and Los Alamos Counties.

Thursday’s forum will be from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the council chambers of the Los Alamos County Municipal Building, 1000 Central Avenue, in Los Alamos. The agenda calls for examining the region’s economic data, its industry clusters, population and economic trends.

This analysis is vital for developing a plan that can foster economic development and job creation across the region. Thursday’s forum is the third in a series.

Additional forums, following the same format, are scheduled on the following dates:

• October 11, 2017 at the Fuller Lodge Art Center in Los Alamos
• November 9, 2017 in Bernalillo County, Location to be determined
• December 14, in Sandoval County, at El Zócalo Event Center, 264 S Camino Del Pueblo, Bernalillo, NM.

All forums are scheduled from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and the public is encouraged to attend.
