The Sandoval County Commission has proclaimed May Older Americans Month, and is urging all county residents to take some time during the month to acknowledge older adults as influential and vital parts of the community.
A proclamation issued at the commission’s April 20, 2017 meeting says in part, "Sandoval County is committed to supporting older adults as they take charge of their health, explore new opportunities and activities, and focus on independence.”
In issuing the proclamation, the commission also noted the role the county’s Community Services Department plays in helping older adults thrive in the community. That role includes offering older adults numerous opportunities to serve their fellow citizens through the county’s Senior Volunteer Program.
Volunteers in this program typically serve more than 60,000 hours each year helping in local schools, libraries, hospitals and other agencies, as well as assisting seniors who are less mobile with running routine errands or simply spending time to visit.
The county’s Community Services Department also operates senior centers across the county, where seniors can gather for lunch and other social activities.
During Older Americans Month, the Community Services Department is hosting a number of special activities at these various centers. The premier event is a health fair and picnic on May 12, 2017 at Rotary Park in Bernalillo.
This event, scheduled from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, will feature food, live music, and door prizes along with free health screenings. A full calendar of events for Older Americans Month is available here.
